On May 8, 1863, Mrs. Hattie E. Shoff of
Circleville, Ohio, received the following letter.
Madame,
It is with great sorrow that I have to confirm the sad news of
the death of your brother, B.C. Chellis. He was taken sick on the
march from Columbia to Murfreesboro March 12. We arrived in camp
March 15th, and had him, at his request, at once removed to the
military hospital. He had a fever at the time but none of us
thought it serious, after two weeks however, the typhoid fever
set in, in spite of the all excertions [sic] and every care that
could be taken, he began to sink, and finally on the 20th day of
April about 11:00 a.m. he died without any struggle.
I can understand how deeply you must feel his loss, for he was a
really good man, a brave solider universally beloved and mourned
by every man in the battery. I know that it is useless for me to
offer consolations at this moment, the loss is too sudden, too
deep, too fresh and I can only point you to him who knows our
sorrows and alone can heal such wounds.

Chattanooga, Jan 25 / 1864
Sir, I have the honor to apply for a leave of absence of thirty(30) days,
to visit my family at Fort Wayne, Ind., which I am very desirous to do,
as I have not seen them for full two years.
I have never had a leave of absence before, never was absent from
my battery a day, since I entered the service. -
I ask for thirty days, because I wish, if possible, to attend to some
Ordnance business at Stevenson, Ala, & also to confer with Adj. Gen.
Laz Noble at Indianapolis on important company affairs.
The battery would be, during my absence, in charge of a Lieutenant
fully competent to transact all current business.
